Although August’s Women’s Month may have ended, it’s essential to remember that celebrating and drawing inspiration from women should not be confined to just one month.

Women continue to make remarkable strides, breaking barriers, and reshaping society every day. In the spirit of this ongoing celebration, let’s take a moment to honour some remarkable women who have left an inerasable mark on their communities, professions, and the world at large.

It is difficult to keep this list short, but to highlight but a few of my personal favourite Superwomen:

Mrs. Constance F. Mayise:

Meet Mrs. Constance F. Mayise, an 81-year-old nursing professional from the rural areas of Kwa Hlabisa, South Africa. She embarked on her nursing journey in the 1950s amidst the challenges of apartheid, all while raising eight children and caring for both her maiden and marital families. Her life is a testament to selflessness and unwavering dedication. Every morning, at the age of 81, she starts her day at 5:00 AM, preparing her signature soft porridge, a symbol of her love and healing touch. Mrs. Mayise has acted as a guardian, foster parent, friend, mother, and provider for over 80 people. She embodies patience, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to her community.

Sicebile Nosipho Ncube:

Sicebile Nosipho Ncube, hailing from the vibrant township of Kwa-Mashu in Durban, stands as a shining example of determination and achievement at the young age of 32. She accelerated through her legal studies at the University of KwaZulu Natal, becoming an Admitted Legal Practitioner of the High Court, an Admitted Conveyancer, and a Qualified Compliance and Governance Officer. Her career journey has seen her working with prominent organizations like the South African Sugar Association and SASOL, where she currently serves as Legal Counsel. Not only has she achieved great heights, but she also empowers other young women through her philanthropic efforts, funding their education. Bonang is the first black woman to become a member of the prestigious Cap Classique Producers Association and has launched her successful wine brand. Her resilience and trailblazing spirit have shattered norms and paved the way for others.

Miriam Makeba:

Known as Mama Afrika, Miriam Makeba was not only an accomplished singer and songwriter but also a formidable Human Rights campaigner. She was the first African recording artist to win a Grammy Award and spent 31 years in exile, fighting against apartheid and advocating for women’s rights to equality. In the post-apartheid era, she became a South African United Nations Goodwill Ambassador and continued her humanitarian efforts through her foundation, supporting abused women and children and contributing to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Her belief that “Girls are the future mothers of our society” continues to inspire generations.

Professor Thuli Madonsela:

Professor Thuli Madonsela is a prominent figure in South Africa, known for her role as a former Public Protector and her contributions to law and social justice. She holds a chair at the University of Stellenbosch, where she conducts social justice research and teaches constitutional and administrative law. Professor Madonsela founded the Thuma Foundation, an independent democracy leadership and literacy social enterprise. She is celebrated for her advocacy of the Constitution, Human Rights, and Social Justice. Her influence is undeniable, having been named one of Time’s 100 influential people and appearing on Forbes lists.
